Problem Statement: Nowadays women's safety is one of the major concerns in our society. So I have decided to work on this statement to elaborate more let me take a live situation.

Situation: A girl aged 18, walking home from college in your small town, after a study session at 11.30 pm when the shops & public services have just been closed. She left her bag & wallet (carrying money & ID cards) at the college, she has nothing but her OnePlus 6T phone. On her 3km walk, she has to pass through slums and narrow streets with street lights turned off already. Scary, isn’t it? Well, you can make her feel safe.

To solve this statement I have designed an app that helps/guides the girl or women in this or relatable situations. The main function of the app is to help the user to reach the emergency contacts or help force. Even though this app is concentrated on women's safety this is also helpful to all the general public too.

My Design Process

  1. Problem Analysis
  2. User Research
  3. Features & Card Sorting
  4. Design Thinking
  5. Wireframing
  6. Design.

Now I will try to explain my work which is involved in every stage.

Problem Analysis

My way of problem analysis involves Target Audience, Competitors, User Expectations, Business Ideas. My findings are as follows:

User Research

Coming to user research I had done both types of researches i.e, Qualitative Analysis and Quantitative Analysis

For Quantitative Analysis I have done the survey and for Qualitative Analysis I have conducted user interviews for two types of users

User Interviews:

  1. The first case lives with family i.e Stay at home
  2. And the second case is living away from the family i.e Stays at the hostel

Note: They both are students. I have concentrated more on the student category because the situations which I had taken were more relatable to this particular age category and most of the target audience was also in this age group i.e, 18–24 years of age.

The questions which I have framed for the interview are:

  1. What is your experience when walking home back from work or college along especially at night time?
  2. Share your past experiences if any
  3. Do you know if your well-known people have gone through these types of situations? If yes can you give the context of that situation?
  4. What is the most common situation you felt that you need help in?
  5. If you get this type of problem who do you try to contact first?
  6. Do you have used these types of services ever before?
  7. Any basic needs you feel that there must be necessary to have?
  8. What are the general precautions you take to avoid these types of situations?
  9. What are your expectations regarding these types of services?
  10. Do you feel unsafe in any situations at home?

And the results for the interview i.e, User Personas are as follows:

User Surveys:

Note: The questions which I have framed for interviews were used for the surveys too because to get a wide range of thoughts on the same problem or situation.

The results of the quantitative research i.e, User Surveys are as follows:

These are some insights into the user survey for full survey results click here

Features & Card Sorting:

After researching I came to understand the problem statement and also the user pain points clearly and I have started to finalize the features of the app and also done the card sorting which is categorizing the scenes of the app.

So finally I have decided on the features needed for the app which covers a wind range of solutions for the pinpoints of the user.

  1. SOS
  2. Live Tracking
  3. Learn Self-Protection techniques in advance
  4. Schedule time to share live location
  5. Single-click to notify emergency contacts
  6. Any remedies or nearby transport facilities like BusStand, Metro Stations, etc.
  7. Live updates to She Team.
  8. Long press power button to intimate emergency contacts and nearby police
  9. Can get into touch with police or she team until she reaches home in very doubtful cases
  10. In a very highly emergency she can call the police or she-team to drop her home

Userflows:

Based on the features finalized I have created user flows into four, They are:

  1. Creating Account
  2. Home Screen
  3. News Feed Page
  4. Nearby(Maps)

The flow diagrams are as follows:

Wireframing:

Now the interesting part of the case study is started after getting to know the user flows now I have started to think about design and started sketching the Ideas which was running in my mind. I am more paper and pen savvy so I draw some wireframes.

While drawing the wireframes I kept in mind that the designs have to include every feature possible from the list of features which I have finalized by the user research, problems, and pain-points.

HI-FI Designs:

Now after a lot of work for the user finally I have started to design the screens which are visually pleasing. My way of designing is While researching and wireframing I completely concentrate on the user problems, pain points, and frustrations to give the best experience for the user. During that time I didn’t concentrate on the visual aspects of the design I just concentrate on the user. When I start the HI-FI Designs now I mostly think about the visual elements along with the user too. This way of designing helps me to balance both the User Experience and the Visual Aspects of the app.
